Fibre Target Calculator
Most adults in the United States fall well short of their fibre target. The adequate intake is set at 14 g per 1,000 kcal, which works out to the familiar numbers by age and sex.
How this is calculated
- Adequate intake: 14 g of fibre per 1,000 kcal. At 2,000 kcal that is 28 g a day.
- The commonly quoted gendered targets are 38 g a day for men under 50 and 30 g over 50, and 25 g for women under 50 and 21 g over 50.
- Increase fibre gradually and drink more fluid. A large sudden increase causes bloating for most people.
